Excellent computer architecture text- even fun and engaging to read

I did skim a couple of pages and now I am going through it. I must admit this really is engaging and at the same time authoritative, a feat which very few books can accomplish. Most reference texts are a bore to read unless you are a practicing engineer or so, but not this one.
But I would like to somebody to help me choose between this and the one which is entitled as computer organization and architecture, the hw and sw interface.
Could somebody write a few lines describing in what aspects do they differ and it at all these books cater to different segments.

Clear and comprehensive

The book is clear and well organized. Some of more basic stuff has been moved to the back of the book and this could be a problem if the audience is not familiar with some of the other (more advanced) topics.

a must-have for computer engineers
| Customer Rating: | I read the 3rd edition cover to cover a few years ago and was amazed by its comprehensive coverage for computing related topics from high level to details. Now, the 4th edition is no worse and worth the money. With significant shift from single processor to multiprocessor, it matches the technology trend and stays on top of current industry challenges. This book is a definitely must have for both learning and referencing.
Regretfully, the publisher decided to save cost by moving many useful appendix chapters to CD and use paperback. The stretch to other topics like virtual memory, networking seems unnecessary. But that doesn't affect the overall book quality.
Combining this architecture level view with in-depth coverage of other important computer areas like "Computer organization and design", "operating system concepts" and "computer network", you will have a clear view of the whole infrastructure of the high tech industry. |
