Summary:

It started out as a bad day for little yellow bird, little white dog, little orange fox, and little brown squirrel. Until . . .

A discovery, and love, and luck and persistence, and a different point of view changed all that. What can turn a bad day into a good day? You decide.

My 3 Year Old Loves It!
Customer Rating:  Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5
This is a simple, charming, feel-good book. I took it out of the library so many times that I had to go out and buy a copy.

My 3 year old daughter loves this book. She loves to listen to it, but she has also memorized the story, so she will "read" it to me over and over. This is the only book that she has ever done that with. This book will always hold a very dear place in my heart for those memories.

It is perfect for a child in the 2-4 age range, in my opinion. Old enough to understand the words/concept, but not old enough to be bored with such a simple book. My 7 year old autistic son liked it, too. But it doesn't capture his heart like it did my daughter.

Always "A Good Day" with Kevin Henkes
Customer Rating:  Score = 4 Score = 4 Score = 4 Score = 4 Score = 4
When something goes wrong, it's easy to write off the day. The smaller your world, the smaller of an event is required to throw the routine. Henkes urges his preschool and kindergarten audience not to judge the quality of a day based on a single negative event. The story gently reminds that days can turn around in the blink of an eye, using little animals who experience trepidation and exultation over the course of a day. A curved shape, bold lines, variation and contrast are effectively employed in the watercolor illustrations so that the animals appear to leap from more abstract backgrounds. Character expressions which change from despondent to adulation are priceless. As the day turns around, the animals in the illustrations also grow bigger, so that the good day illustration details dominate over the smaller bad details. The large typeface size and corresponding pictures encourage early readers to interpret the text. It's a much lighter choice than Judith Viorst's Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No-Good Very Bad Day to explain that everyone, even animals, to explain that something going wrong early on doesn't necessarily determine the course of the day. The pacing is picture perfect. All of these factors make "A Good Day" a good choice for your child's book shelf or storytime.

A Good Day

With 9 grandchildren and 7 neices and nephews,as well as a keen interest in children's literature, I stay on the lookout for books that would appeal to their varied ages. A Good Day will be a fine addition to the collection of one of the younger children.

Lovely pictures, colors, VERY simple text, good for kids under 2

perhaps designed for readers/listeners even younger than my 2.5 year old. Love the graphics, but the text is too simple to hold any attention, and the story itself is so very short. Would have loved a bit more length... we are fans of Henkes Kitten book though!

Lovely Book

It's a lovely book with an important message. It's terrific for an older sibbling to read to a younger one. The pictures compliment the book beautifully.

We love Kevin Henkes in our house. Both my children have grown up with "Lily" and all her friends. My daughter yearns for another in the Lily series.

All of Kevin Henkes books are enchanting. This is for the younger set, but it's a nice read for slightly older children as a reminder of just how important the simple things in life truly are.
